Swiss National Park Switzerland

You can’t go wrong with a visit to this mesmerizing part of Switzerland. We recommend visiting the Swiss National Park by car (leaving from Zurich). We love renting our cars through Discover Cars.

The Swiss National Park is the country’s only national park and is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It is also one of the oldest parks in Europe. Thanks to the strict rules enforced by the park, this is an area of stunning, raw alpine beauty.

The picturesque greenery, majestic rivers, and snowy peaks span 170 square kilometers of the Western Rhaetian Alps.

There are 80 kilometers of hiking trails for you to explore — and you’ll come across countless types of wildlife, including ibexes, golden eagles, and wolves.

Be wary of some of these animals, as they can be dangerous if provoked.

Some of the top trails in the park include the around the sapphire Lakes of Macun or the easy and panoramic Alp Trupchun hike. You can also admire the Elbe Sandstone mountains of the region and the vibrant Kamenice Riverbank.

There’s more, as the Pravcicka Brana is Europe’s largest sandstone arch and the perfect place to snap a memorable family photo.

You can reach the Swiss National Park from Zurich. Whilst there is a train you can catch that makes a few stops, we recommend renting a car through Discover Cars and driving there instead – it will take around 2hr30min.

Where to Stay Close to the Swiss National Park

Considering it is a long drive to get here from Zurich and an even longer train ride, I recommend you stay for at least a night. The closest town to stay in is Zernez. Zernez is only a short drive away from the National Park.

Book your stay at Hotel Alpina. It is the best-rated hotel in the area with lovely spacious rooms.
