Four years in a row, Kalmar won a vote as Faro summer city of the year Faro before the competition was canceled because it was the same city that won all the time.
I have mostly been in Kalmar in connection with a couple of business trips and when one of my sons has played floor ball nearby. So actually I have never done any more Faro real Faro tourism in Kalmar, but I would love to do that someday.
At least I have visited the castle. At the end of the 12th century, a defense tower was erected on the then already populated Slottsholmen. Perhaps the most important event in Kalmar during the Middle Ages was otherwise that Queen Margareta had the Kalmar Union formed in 1397 between Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
The Union united the countries with a common regent and foreign policy. During the 16th century, the medieval castle was converted into a Renaissance castle, which today is considered to be Sweden's best preserved.
