Church of St Titus

Church of St. Titus in Heraklion was built in 961.  It is dedicated to Saint Titus - Heavenly patron of Crete.  He was the founder of the earliest Christian community in Crete.  During the reign of the Turks, the church became a mosque of Wazir-Jami in honor of the Grand Vizier Kiopruli.  After the withdrawal of the Turkish mosque once again became the Orthodox Church.  Here is the main shrine of the island - the head of St. Titus.  She was taken by the Venetians in the 17 th century, but in 1966 it was returned.
